Conference Topics
The Stochastic Modeling Techniques and Data Analysis International Conference (SMTDA) main objective is to welcome papers, both theoretical or practical, presenting new techniques and methodologies in the broad area of stochastic modeling and data analysis. An objective is to use the methods proposed for solving real life problems by analyzing the relevant data. Also, the use of recent advances in different fields will be promoted such as for example, new optimization and statistical methods, data warehouse, data mining and knowledge systems, computing-aided decision supports and neural computing.
Particular attention will be given to interesting applications in engineering, productions and services (maintenance, reliability, planning and control, quality control, finance, insurance, management and administration, inventory and logistics, marketing, environment, human resources, biotechnology, medicine, ...).

Plenary Speakers
Jaromir Antoch Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic Talk Title: "Estimation of Fiber System Orientation Local Approach Based on Image Analysis" Jaromir Antoch earned his Ph.D. degree in statistics from the Charles University of Prague (Czech Republic) in 1982. He spent his entire professional career at the department of probability and mathematical statistics of the faculty of mathematics and physics of the Charles University. Currently he is a full time professor and a head of its statistical group. During the years he spent, among others, several years in France (Universities at Bordeaux, Toulouse and Grenoble) and Italy (Universities at Cagliari, Napoli and Rome). His research interests include statistical computing, simulations, change point detection, robust and nonparametric statistics, industrial statistics and applications (especially in the industry). During 1992-1996 he has been a chairman of the Board of Directors of the European Regional Section of the International Association for Statistical Computing (IASC), for the years 2007-2009 he is a President of IASC and a Council Member of the International Statistical Institute. During 2001-2007 he has been President of the Czech Statistical Society.
Narayanaswamy Balakrishnan Distinguished University Professor of Mathematics & Statistics, McMaster University Hamilton, Ontario, Canada
Editor-in-Chief: Communications in Statistics and in the editorial board of many journals and scientific committee member of many conferences and ASMDA and SMTDA as well. Research Profile: Order statistics, distribution theoryMy research interests are in order statistics, outliers, distribution theory, statistical inference, records, multivariate analysis, and industrial statistics. Order statistics arise naturally in many problems such as life-testing and reliability experiments, outlier detection, robust inference, etc. My work in this area covers both theoretical (like bounds, approximations, recurrence relations, characterizations, etc.) as well as applied (like linear inference, acceptance sampling plans, tolerance limits, prediction, etc.) aspects. Another major area of interest to me is statistical distribution theory. Statistical distributions play a fundamental role in many applied problems and form the basis for model building and parametric statistical inference. My contributions to this area have been through proposing new distributions, developing inference techniques for several distributions, and deriving characterizations of distributions. My most recent work concerns order statistics under non-standard conditions. Work in this direction is carried out by using permanents (of some special matrices) and their properties.

Jean-Marie Robine
Research Director, French National Institute of Health and Medical Research Chair, Department of Biostatistics, University of Montpellier 1, France
Jean-Marie Robine is a Research Director at the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research and head of the Health and Demography team at the Department of Biostatistics, University of Montpellier 1, France. He attempts to measure the impact that the continuation of increases in life expectancy may have on the health status of the population. In particular, he works on the measure of disability and on the evolution of the health status of populations. He also studies human longevity, with the aim of understanding the relations between health and longevity. Since its creation in 1989, he has been the coordinator of the International Network on Health Expectancy (REVES), which brings together more than 150 researchers from more than 100 research institutes or universities in over 30 countries worldwide. He is the project leader of the European Health Expectancy Monitoring Unit (EHEMU), supported by the European Union. He is also responsible for the development of the International Database on Longevity (IDL) in association with the main research demographic centres. In the field of the genetic of longevity, he was one of the principal investigators of the European challenge for Healthy Ageing project (ECHA, Fifth European Research Framework, 2001-2004) and he is one of the newly Genetic of Healthy Ageing project (GEHA, Sixth European Research Framework, 2004-2009). He is the chair of the Committee on Longevity and Health of the International Union for the Scientific Study of the Population (IUSSP) and co-chair of the Steering Committee of the World Ageing Survey (WAS) prepared by the International Association of Gerontology (IAG).
